Creative thinkers behind ECU City student film project

It’s not every day you get to capture the building of a new university campus as part of your degree.

A group of five ECU School of Arts and Humanities students recently had the chance to not only hone their filmmaking and storytelling skills, but also experience a future university campus in the making.  

Students Matthew Stasinowsky, Rhys Mackean, Kiana Roberts, Jenny Tsai and Angus Cullen-Falconer were tasked with producing a short video about the construction of the world-class ECU City as part of their study towards an Industry and Community Project unit.

The unit sees third-year students work on an industry project to gain valuable real-world experience and on-the-job skills to prepare them for their future careers.

The film project is one way that students are involved in every stage of the development of ECU City, while gaining unique learning opportunities along the journey. 

The talented student team put their creative skills and knowledge into practice, planning the project from the initial brief and scoping, through to storyboarding, on-site filming, and post-production.

Working closely with ECU City’s Head Contractor, Multiplex, the students captured a rare behind-the-scenes view of the rapidly progressing construction works.

The result is an engaging short video that shines a light on the stunning city of Perth and the construction journey of ECU City, while also revealing an exciting hint of what future students can expect at the brand-new campus.

Now in the main works phase, ECU City is starting to reshape the Perth City Link precinct.

The 11-super level, world-class campus is a landmark project that will see more than 10,000 students and staff learning, working, engaging and performing in the heart of the city from 2026.

The $853 million project is part of the Perth City Deal, a collaboration between the Australian Government, the Western Australian Government and ECU to deliver Perth’s first inner-city comprehensive university campus.

Once open, ECU City will bring fresh energy and a dynamic new home for Creative Industries, Business and Technology.
